New Wedgwood Gallery to Open in November

On November 19, the Birmingham Museum of Art will open its new Wedgwood gallery featuring objects from the Buten Wedgwood Collection.  The Collection, which came to the Museum in the fall of 2008, includes more than 8,000 objects dating from the inception of the Wedgwood factory in 1759 through the mid-twentieth century.  About 200 objects made in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries will be installed in the new gallery adjacent to the Beeson Wedgwood Collection on the Museum’s third floor.  Additionally, a group of pieces dating from the mid-twentieth century will be presented in the hallway immediately outside the gallery.  This new installation will build upon the Museum’s fabulous gallery of eighteenth-century Wedgwood and will further the story of the Wedgwood factory, undoubtedly one of the most important ceramics manufactories ever.

Please join us for the following events:

Thursday, November 19th, 6pm annual Chenoweth Lecture, Dr. Anne Forschler-Tarrasch, The Marguerite Jones Harbert and John M. Harbert III Curator of Decorative Arts, Wedgwood: A Living Tradition, followed by a reception and book signing by Lord Wedgwood

Friday, November 20th, 5:30pm opening celebration of our new Wedgwood gallery, featuring Anne Forschler-Tarrasch and Lord Wedgwood in conversation in the gallery, with reception.

Earl highly recommends staying at the Tutwiler Hotel in Birmingham, one block from museum, a beautiful old grande damme hotel, now part of Hilton chain with surprisingly good rates last time I checked.
